Description :
During steelmaking, the integration of scrap introduces residual elements that can adversely affect metallurgical properties, such as increased austenite flow resistance and altered transformation behaviors into ferrite, pearlite, bainite, and martensite. The variability in scrap content and the build-up of hard-to-remove alloying elements like copper, tin, molybdenum, and chromium are expected to increase. Understanding the impact of these elements on steel processing is crucial for defining the maximum tolerable concentrations. Enhanced precision in these boundaries can significantly benefit the entire steel production chain by boosting efficiency and promoting sustainable practices.
Practically, a series of materials is cast with anticipated future levels of residual elements, then processed through hot rolling and machining into samples for subsequent analyses, including dilatometry and metallography.
