Circular Economy

Efficient use of valuable materials

"Our process-product-applications approach gives us an unparalleled vision and unique capabilities to tackle circularity issues whilst conceiving new multilayered components for batteries or electrolyzers. By already anticipating second life or recyclability at end of life we integrate resource efficiency and eco-design in our daily work."

Unit Manager Metal Production and Platform Coordinator Circular Economy

Circularity starts with efficient use and lean production of materials and evolves around maximum value retention to guarantee durability and sustainability.

Next to optimized production processes, fast-developing tracing and sorting technologies, solutions for reuse or remanufacturing become more impactful. Recycling is only the ultimate step in closing the loop of locally sourced, efficiently produced, and maximum reused materials.

Discover how you can achieve the best design for recycling and an optimal resource efficient
product or process.

Resource efficient metal recovery

Pre-treatment, sorting and separation are mandatory to get excellent quality recycled products, whilst processes themselves need to be much more robust to convert waste materials into useable materials. The application domain extends way beyond the metal industry and is open to many types of non-metallic materials.

Design and manufacturing of circular products

Lean use of alloying elements assisted by traceability optimizes reuse and remanufacturing of metallic products. Some advanced technologies like additive manufacturing can both be a way to use expensive metals as efficiently as possible and it can be a tool to reuse and recycle some of the end-of-life metals.

Industrial residues and end-of-life products

Some running developments like the recovery of household Al waste show the complexity of the waste to metal process, including the presence of non-metallic elements. Variations of the input flow whilst requiring a stable output challenge the understanding of the full mass balance beyond empirical laws.

Added value materials for secondary resources

The optimal use of certain complex material fluxes should be stimulated to fully close all material loops and guarantee local sourcing of secondary material flows. Dedicated work on products like permanent magnets, photovoltaic panels, windmils and many more
