Publication highlight – Lightweight long-span steel decks using High-Strength Steels
Research conducted in collaboration with ArcelorMittal – Article available in German
CRM Group is pleased to announce the publication of a scientific article authored by Emilie Dupont (Construction Unit, CRM Group), in collaboration with ArcelorMittal, in the journal Stahlbau.
The article, published in German, investigates the benefits of using high-strength steel (HSS) grades for long-span roofing profiles.
The study demonstrates how HSS enables thinner cold-formed trapezoidal profiles while maintaining equivalent load-bearing capacity, resulting in:
Significant weight reduction (up to 16–18% depending on profile geometry)
Lower material and production costs
Reduced CO₂ emissions
Improved sustainability when combined with low-carbon steel produced via electric arc furnace (EAF) technology
Why HSS matters for modern construction
Design requirements in today’s construction industry increasingly target longer spans, lighter structures, and lower environmental impact.
This research confirms that HSS-based decking systems offer:
Lightweight yet robust solutions
Easier handling and assembly
Lower global carbon footprint
Overall cost optimisation
This publication highlights the added value of combining structural performance with sustainability, reinforcing CRM Group’s commitment to supporting the construction sector with innovative and low-impact material solutions.
