Visual assisted inspection of rolling stands in the hot strip mill for improved maintenance (Vismain)
Objectives
This project aims at introducing a new tool for the hot strip mill to assist the operators in the visual inspection for maintenance ensuring a better safety, ergonomics, and improved inspection. This new tool will be further expanded with artificial intelligence to help the operator find problems or anomalies within the stand.
Description
During each maintenance stop and even during roll changes a visual inspection of the rolling stands is performed. In most cases the inspection is performed at a distance from outside the stand with a flashlight resulting in poor results. Inspections by entering the rolling stand give an improved view of the stand but are risky as a maintenance person must work on top of a slippery backup roll without grips, even multiple people have to enter to discuss the situation. Furthermore, if backup rolls are not mounted inspection is even not possible.
