RealCapt

Decarbonation of Wallonia’s heavy industry

RealCapt is included in the DECARBOWAL group of projects, where the CRUCIAL project cluster aims to reduce the carbon footprint of Wallonia. The acronym inspired by the objective to induce “CiRcUlarité du CO2 : Innovation et Rôle Pionnier de la WALlonie” highlights our region is aiming to be at the forefront of new carbon reduction technologies. Especially at the support of its industry and this through two main ways:

  • Source reduction of CO2 industrial emissions
  • Development of de-fossilized fuels type e-fuels

Technical challenges

The RealCapt part of CRUCIAL – DECARBOWAL focusses on CO2 capture by means of solid adsorption technology. Adsorption processes are well established for applications such as air separation, gas drying and hydrogen purification. Solid adsorbents used to capture CO2 are at varying technological levels and industrial capture processes are yet to be developed. Hence the objectives of the project are multiple.

Test the most promising absorbent material

Sorbent candidates identified by UMons within the SORBINNOV project are tested in semi-industrial context. RealCapt upscales the technology to pilot scale and will mimic capture conditions defined by industrial use cases like lime production, cement kilns, flat glass production, metallurgy, …. The adsorption cycle trials are realized in conditions identified as the most advantageous based on the adsorbent and the application. Industrial application perspectives will be established in collaboration with industrial partners.

Procure novel adsorbents

New adsorbents will be produced and purchased in sufficient quantities to test on a pilot at semi-industrial scale proving their ability to integrate into industrial processes.

Cycling adsorption and desorption testing

In practice this means trials of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA), Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA), or mixed adsorption cycles (TPSA) are performed on the HUGE Pilot, using industrial relevant conditions for CO2 capture.  These trials aim to measure the maximal productivity of the capture process based on the capture rate of CO2, the purity of concentrated CO2 flux, the efficiency of different regeneration and global energetic consumption of the process.
