INDUSTRIAL CONTEXT:
ArcelorMittal is world leader in steel making. Amongst its various products, ArcelorMittal sells prepainted steels. Prepainted steel is made of a succession of coating layers, which are applied on “coil-coating” lines. It is a complex and technological products in terms of properties. It is mainly used for applications in the field of construction like warehouses, industrial buildings, cladding and roofing. But it is also used for domestic appliances or general industry purposes.
ArcelorMittal developments in the field of organic coatings are carried out in the R&D lab of Advanced Coatings and Construction Solutions, CRM Group. The CRM Group is a 75 year-old R&D center, now employing around 290 people and is managing an important set of analytical equipments and pilot lines (http://www.crmgroup.be/).
OBJECTIVE(S):
In the frame of its developments ArcelorMittal is willing to propose products respectful of environment, without solvent, with identical performances. For this reason we are investigating the performances of Radiation curable coatings in the field of prepainted steel. The radcure products must be completely characterized and we must answer to many questions before being able to propose industrially viable solutions.
The intern will provide support to the project team by tackling several pending questions. We will investigate mechanical performances of radcure and solvent borne paints (topcoat and primer). We will include color (pigment concentration), thickness and gloss effects. We may have to optimize mechanical performances and metal/paint adhesion by working on surface treatment alternatives.
All the samples will be prepared in our labs by conventional curing (thermal curing) and radiation curing (UV and EB curing).
Characterization methodologies will include: T-Bend, Clemen, microhardness, friction coefficient, scratch test, DMA, wear and fretting resistance, condensation/Salt spray test,…
PRACTICAL ASPECTS:
Duration : ~ 4-6 months.
Education : Bachelor in Chemistry with specialization in Coatings and Materials or Master in Chemistry/Materials.
The internship will take place in the premises of CRM Group – AC&CS on the University of Liège campus (Sart-Tilman) in Belgium
Indemnity + possibility of Erasmus scholarship for foreign students
